The
countdown timer will be required of everyone. It is an exercise
that will help you become familiar with the editing system.
Each person will be responsible for scripting, shooting, and
editing four of the six graded packages. One package will
be randomly assigned: One person will script and shoot the
raw video for a package, and that footage will then be given
to another person in the class to edit. The fifth project
will be a Photoshop assignment.
DUE
DATES FOR PROJECTS WILL BE FIRM, and the projects (raw
footage, random packages, scripts, and edited packages) must
be turned in at the start of class. Late projects will lose
10 points per day. Projects more than three days late will
not be accepted. We have three edit suites and multiple camcorders.
You are expected to schedule your shoot/edit times accordingly.
Each
edited project will REQUIRE:
- A
typed two-column full script (spell-checked and prepared by
the photographer). This MUST be turned in at the same time
as the raw footage (all packages).
- Raw
footage on at least one tape for the editor (random package
only).
- A
voice-over tape. Either the videographer or editor may cut
this (random package only).
- A
final, edited package. You must edit two seconds of black
before first video and after the last frame of video onto
every package.
Each
person will produce the following video packages:
- One
:30 voice-over news story or :30 commercial with natural sound
or music on one audio channel and narration on the other channel.
This package must be no longer than :30 and no shorter than
:29.
- Two
1:00 news packages with one soundbite and voice over. The
packages must have music or nat sound on one channel, and
the VO on another. One package must have a lighting setup
evident. One package must have graphics.
- One
2:00 news packages with two soundbites from different people
(one can be an exterior shot, one must be an interior shot
done with a lighting setup). You can do a standup intro and
outro, or you can put the package together with only voice-overs.
This package must have split audio and graphics.
- One
Photoshop project turned in on disk. This will be an image
that you have processed in Photoshop. You will use an image
captured from a camcorder, digital camera, or scanned in from
a still image. You must use multiple layers and titles. Your
final product must be saved in NTSC resolution, 720 x 480.
- A
long form package on the University of Montevallo or a topic
of your choice, that must run a minimum of 3:00 and a maximum
of 4:00, and must have titles and a mixed soundtrack (audio
from two or more souces, e.g., narration and natural sound,
narration and music, etc.).
Packages
will be graded based on technical & creative merit. 50%
of the package grade will come from an evaluation of the technical
skills used in the production process, and 50% of the package
grade will come from an evaluation of the creative aspects
of the package. I will only grade each final, edited package.
Standards for each package will get progressively harder,
because you should be gaining experience as the semester progresses.
By the fourth package, I expect professional looking packages
which make extensive use of video cutaways, good shot selection,
good audio, and good lighting. You will be expected to make
use of all three edit suites in the Mass Comm building. Also,
USE A TRIPOD! (required)
